Tours & Safaris Day 1 The climb begins from the park gate (2000m) above sea level, walking through the rain forest and heather up to Machame Hut situated at 10,000ft./3000m. This low alpine area is heavily populated by flowers grasslands and some species of butterflies and insects. Dinner and overnight at Machame campsite. Duration: 4-5 hrs trekking &endash; 12kms Day 2 The route takes us across a little valley and along a steep ridge through heather until the end and then the route turns west into a river gorge. From there, Shira Hut at 12500ft./3800m., is only about 3 to 4 hours away. The temperatures at this altitude range between 40°F during the day. Only a few species of vegetation survive at this altitude. Dinner and overnight at Shira Hut. Duration: 3-4hrs trekking &endash; 9kms
Day 3 From Shira Hut, the course turns east towards Kibo peak and then southward to a larva tower called Shark's Tooth. The route then turns right towards Barranco Hut nestled between glacier streams at 13,000ft./3,900m. There is hardly any vegetation except a few species of lichens. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Hut. Duration: 5-6hrs trekking &endash; 14kms
Day 4 The day begins with a climb up a vertical wall called "breakfast hill." Then we head north towards Barafu Hut at 15,500ft./4,600m. This is the arctic region. We will camp and prepare for the summit here. Duration: 5-6hrs trekking - 14kms
The climb to the summit usually begins at around midnight. The route is very steep slope up to Stella's Point. The stretch between Stella's Point and the summit, the gully, can be an easy stroll depending on wind and snow conditions. After an hour's walk one can reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340ft./5,896m. Duration: 6-7hrs &endash; 14kms
Day 5 The descend follows the exact ascending route down to Barafu Hut. Duration: 3-4hrs then straight to Rau Campsite for dinner and overnight. Duration 4-5hrs &endash; 12kms
Day 6 The day is spent descending through moorland and the glades of the forest to the Kidia park gate. Duration: 5-8hrs - 18kms End of Trekking
Machame Route Guide Map:
MARANGU ROUTE 6 DAYS TREKKING Day 1 Following breakfast, we will drive a "mini-course" to Kilimanjaro National Park, where you will have the chance to view some beautiful country. Upon arrival and registration with the park staff, we will begin the adventure of the ascent on Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world! We will proceed through the Mandara rain forest, then will rest for the evening at the Mandara encampment, located at 9,000 ft (2,700m) on the mountain. DURATION: 3 &endash; 4HRS - 9KMS Day 2 Passing through the Glades, we will follow a trail along the open moorlands to our evening destination of the Horombo encampment at 12,000 ft (3,700m). DURATION: 4 &endash; 5HRS - 12KMS
Day 3 Day spent at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. Day trip to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m) Lunch, Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut. DURATION: 2 &endash; 3HRS &endash; 6KMS
Day 4 Passing our last watering point, our ascent continues upon the saddle of Kilimanjaro and between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. We will then stop for the evening at the Kibo encampment located at 15,000 ft (4,700m). Here we prepare for our midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. DURATION: 5 &endash; 6HRS &endash; 11KMS
Day 5 At midnight we begin our forward to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We advance upon steep and heavy scree reaching Gilman's Point on the crater rim of the mountain located at 18,640 ft (5,861m), then on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa located at 19,340 ft (5,895m). DURATION: 6 - 7HRS &endash; 4.5KMS
After we leave Uhuru Peak, we will return to the Horombo encampment for the evening. DURATION: 4 &endash; 5HRS - 12KMS
Day 6 Our journey downwards brings us past the Mandara encampment and back to our entrance point of the park's gate. Climbers will then be presented with a certificate of achievement for the successful climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro! DURATION: 3 &endash; 4HRS - 9KMS End of Trekking.
