we have interviewed in the last
few
years, or who were profiled previously in our magazines.
We
profiled the Board Chairman David Emerson in 1996 when he
was President and CEO of Vancouver
International Airport
Authority (YVR).
DAVID
EMERSON, CHAIRMAN:
The
government recently appointed David Emerson as the new
chair of the board of the BC Ferry Corporation, replacing
Michael Francis. Emerson who has held positions such as
CEO of Vancouver International Airport Authority and
deputy minister to the premier, sits on the board of BC
Gas Inc., Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Co of
Canada, and is chairman of the Forest Products
Association of Canada. David Emerson has also recently be
appointed as chair of the BC Progress Board, a volunteer
panel of senior business executives that establishes
benchmarks for the provincial economy.
HERMAN
DRIEDIGER
We interviewed Mr. Driediger in 2001 as Chairman of
the Abbotsford
Airport
Authority and for a major feature on Agriculture
in BC.
He is CEO of Eze Rent-it Centre Ltd., an equipment rental
company, and has also worked in banking, the livestock
feed industry, livestock production and commercial
construction. Driediger has served with a variety of
agricultural organizations, associations, policy advisory
boards and task forces. Now living in Abbotsford, he is a
past president of the B.C. Egg Producers Association and
the Abbotsford-Matsqui Chamber of Commerce.
PAT
CORBETT: We had the privilege of meeting Mr. Corbett
when he was first developing his Cariboo property. Pat
Corbett is president of the the Hills Health Ranch and
related companies, including a national distribution
company, near 100 Mile House. Corbett started the Hills
Health Ranch in 1983, together with his wife, after a
career in building construction, land development and
real estate.
JIM
PATTISON: Our publishers have worked with and
profiled Mr. Pattison's companies for many years. Jim
Pattison is chairman, chief executive officer and sole
owner of the Jim Pattison Group, Canada's third-largest
privately held company. The Jim Pattison Group has more
than 24,000 employees, annual sales of $5 billion and
assets totalling more than $3 billion. With investments
in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia,
the Jim Pattison Group is involved in a wide variety of
industries including food services, packaging,
manufacturing, communications, entertainment,
transportation and export services.

KATHRYN
ADRIAN: Kathryn Adrian is the president of Please
Mum, a children's-wear manufacturer and retailer firm,
which she founded in 1986. It employs 800 people across
Canada. A graduate of the B.C. Institute of Technology in
marketing management, Adrian worked in retail fashion
before establishing her company.
LAWRENCE
BATES: Lawrence Bates is president and chief
executive officer of Sun-Rype Products Ltd. He has been
with Sun-Rype for 32 years and has held several senior
positions including director of marketing and sales,
vice-president of marketing and sales, and vice-president
and general manager. Prior to joining Sun-Rype, Bates
worked in food distribution management.
ALEX
CAMPBELL: Alex Campbell is president and co-founder
of Thrifty Foods, which operates 16 stores on Vancouver
Island Victoria in 1977. The company has more than 2,400
employees, and a market share of 40 per cent on Vancouver
Island.
DONALD
GOULD: Donald Gould is president and CEO of The Pas
Lumber Co. Ltd. in Prince George. He started with the
company in 1965 as controller and office manager, then
became senior vice-president and general manager in 1972,
and president and chief operating officer in 1984. Prior
to that, he was an accounting student with Gardner and
Co. Gould has served as a director of numerous
associations and companies.
NORMAN
KEEVIL: Norman Keevil is chairman and CEO of Teck
Corp., and effective Aug. 1, will become chairman of the
merged Teck Cominco Ltd. He joined Teck Corp. in 1962 as
vice-president exploration, became executive
vice-president in 1968, president and CEO in 1981, and
chairman and CEO in 2000. He is also chairman of the
board of Cominco Ltd., and a director of the Mining
Association of Canada.
DEREK
LEE: Mr. Lee operates International Realty Inc., an
integrated property management, brokerage and development
company that manages a diversified real estate portfolio
with a market value of more than $400 million. The
company has expertise in the North American real estate
market, and business contacts throughout North America
and the Pacific Rim. Lee graduated from the University of
B.C. in 1982 with a bachelor of commerce degree in urban
land economics.
MICHAEL
PHELPS: Michael Phelps is chairman and chief
executive officer of Westcoast Energy Inc. He joined the
company in 1982 as a special adviser to the president and
has since held the positions of senior vice-president,
executive vice-president and chief financial officer, and
president. He holds a master of laws degree from the
London School of Economics. Phelps has served as a member
of numerous boards.
MARTHA
PIPER: Martha Piper is president and vice-chancellor
of the University of British Columbia. Before joining UBC
in 1997, Dr. Piper was vice-president research at the
University of Alberta, and dean of the university's
Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. She received her
doctorate in epidemiology and biostatics from McGill
University in 1979, her masters in child development from
the University of Connecticut, and her bachelor of
science in physical therapy from the University of
Michigan.
STEPHANIE
SHARP: Stephanie Sharp is managing director of
corporate finance at Arthur Anderson LLP. Her experience
with mid-size and large corporations includes a range of
operational, strategic and advisory roles in the health
care, energy, manufacturing, technology and
telecommunications sectors. Sharp has been instrumental
in the establishment and growth of a number of business
and not-for-profit ventures.
KEN
SHIELDS: Ken Shields is president and chief executive
officer of Raymond James Ltd., the Canadian subsidiary of
Florida-based Raymond James Financial, Inc. Shields is a
founder of Goepel Shields and Partners Inc., which merged
with McDermid St. Lawrence Securities Ltd. in 1998 to
become the full service investment firm of Goepel
McDermid Inc. It was acquired by Raymond James Financial
in January 2001. Shields has been an active member of the
business and financial community in Canada for more than
25 years. He is a director of TimberWest Forest Corp., a
past governor of the Vancouver Stock Exchange, past
chairman of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada,
and a former director of Slocan Forest Products Ltd.,
Pacifica Papers Inc. and the Mutual Fund Dealers
Association of Canada.
MARK
SHUPARSKI : Mark Shuparski is president and CEO of
the Bentall Corp. Its principal business is the
acquisition, development, leasing, financing and
management of downtown and suburban office properties,
primarily in Vancouver, Seattle and Southern California.
Prior to joining Bentall in 1995, Shuparski was president
of GWL Realty, and before that was a senior
vice-president of Markborough Properties, responsible for
its land, office and industrial portfolio in Canada, the
U.S. and the United Kingdom. He holds a masters of
business administration from the University of Western
Ontario and a bachelor of environmental studies from the
University of Waterloo.
GERRI
SINCLAIR: Gerri Sinclair is the founder and former
president and CEO of Ncompass Labs, an Internet software
company recently acquired by Microsoft. Sinclair is the
founding director of the ExCITE lab at Simon Fraser
University. She was an IBM consulting scholar, as well as
a visiting research scientist at IBM's T.J. Watson
Research Labs in New York. She holds a PhD from UBC and
has served on advisory boards, including Canada's
National Advisory Council on the Information Highway and
the Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research,
Industry and Education.
