Peace Parks around the world
by Jerry W. Bird,

At the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, myself and several colleagues took part in a think tank sponsored by Louis D'Amore of the International Institute of Peace Through Tourism. I was so inspired by the idea, I proposed to scout a location on banks of the Peace River in Northern Canada. Such a Peace Park would be dedicated building bridges of understanding between North Americans of various races.

I have made many trips to the Peace River Country, most recently when I produced the Commemorative Video saluting the Alaska Highway's 50th Anniversary. We profiled the Dawson Creek, BC area in our first Air Tourism edition and will provide more details on the chosen location in the months ahead. The following letter outlines one of the latest initiatives by Mr. D'Amore and his team.

Message of Congratulations from Louis D'Amore, Founder and President, International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT)

President Frederick Chiluba,
Minister Michael Mabenga,

The dedication of Dag Hammarskjold International Peace Park marks a milestone in history. It pays tribute to one of the 20th century's great leaders and his untiring efforts in working for peace in Africa and throughout the world. It comes as we approach the 40th anniversary of the death of Secretary General Hammarskjold and embark on the U.N. Decade of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.

IIt comes as the leaders and people of Africa set out on the "Millennium African Recovery Programme" … and demonstrates the commitment of the leaders and people of Zambia to a new vision for Africa &endash; a vision of peace, non-violence, and sustainable human, social, and economic development for all its people &endash; a vision that is befitting of the memory and legacy of this great man.

We are honored by the dedication of the Hammarskjold International Peace Park as the first IIPT Peace Park in Africa as we continue in launching the IIPT Global Peace Parks Project …… with a goal of 2,000 peace parks circling the earth in this UN Decade of Peace; Each park with a "Bosco Sacro" &endash; a peace grove, as a symbolic link to one another and a symbol of hope for the future.

We will continue in our efforts towards "Building a Culture of Peace through Tourism" in Africa with the First IIPT African Conference On Peace through Tourism" being organized in collaboration with the Africa Travel Association and Mpumalanga Tourism Authority. The Conference will be held in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, March 3-7, 2002 ……we invite each of you to join us in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province, on those dates.

Please accept my heartfelt congratulations in preserving the memory of Secretary General Hammarskjold and this perpetual living legacy to his vision of peace.

Respectfully yours,
Louis D'Amore
