The
Walled City of Harar
The Shewa Gate is one of seven entrances to the ancient walled city of Harar , east of Addis Ababa, where the terrain is quite different from the central highlands. With almost 100 mosques, Harar is considered to be Islam's fourth most holy city. The French poet, Rimbaud, chose Harar as his city of exile from French intolerance. Recently restored, the 'Rimbaud Maison' is open to the public. In Harar and Dire Dawa, our North American journalist group found photo ops around every turn -- so watch for more features, profiles and stories of Ethiopia's Historic Route on this site and in Africa Travel Magazine.
