1) HISTORIC ROUTE

01. Arrive in Addis Ababa; meet your guide holding a Green Land Tours sticker and transfer to hotel. O/N (overnight) 4-star hotel.

02. Full day tour of the capital. Visit the Entoto Mountains, with its view over the capital, the National Museum and Trinity Church. Afternoon visit to the Merkato, the biggest open-air market in Africa and shopping. Meals on your own; O/N in a 4-star hotel. You may also arrive on this day, depending on international flight schedules.

03. Fly to Bahir Dar, and transfer to hotel for check-in. If time permits, visit Bezait Palace, with its view over Lake Tana and the Blue Nile. Afternoon boat trip of about 4-5 hours on Lake Tana to admire the island monasteries, e.g. Ura Kidane Mehret, Mahal Zeghie Gyorgis and, if time permits, Asua Mariam. O/N in Bahir Dar.

04. Morning drive to admire the Blue Nile falls. Lunch back to Bahir Dar. Afternoon drive to Gondar, city of castles and churches. Dinner and O/N Gondar.

05. Full day visit to castles and churches in Gondar: visit the castle compound, Debre Birhan Sellasie church (light of Trinity) with its wonderful murals, King Fasiladas' bath, the old Qusquam monastery, Empress Mentewab's palace and more. O/N Gondar.

06. Fly to Axum, site of the beginning of civilization in Ethiopia. Check into hotel then visit the steles, various archeological sites, the bath and palace of the Queen of Sheba, tombs of kings; and churches such as St Mary of Tsion (where legend says the Ark of the Covenant lies). O/N in Axum.

07. Fly to Lalibela, defined as the eighth wonder of the world, and in the afternoon visit the first group of rock-hewn churches. Meals and O/N in Lalibela.

08. Morning visit to one of the churches outside of town. We propose an excursion by mule to Asheten Mariam Church and its spectacular views. Or travel by car to the cave church of Naktuleab. Afternoon visit to the remaining churches in Lalibela.

09. Fly to Addis Ababa. Afternoon free. O/N 4-star hotel. Or in the evening depart for home.

10. Departure if post-congress tour or start congress if pre-congress tour.

2) OMO VALLEY

01. Arrive in Addis Ababa; meet your guide holding a Green Land Tours sticker and transfer to hotel. O/N (overnight) 4-star hotel.

02. Full day tour of the capital. Visit the Entoto Mountains, with its view over the capital, the National Museum and Trinity Church. Afternoon visit to the Merkato, the biggest open-air market in Africa and shopping. Meals on your own; O/N in a 4-star hotel.

03. Drive to the Rift Valley lakes of Shala, Abyata and Langano, admiring wonderful views, many birds, pelicans, flamingoes, hot springs and more. Relax at Wenney Eco-lodge, secluded in a natural paradise on the shores of Lake Langano and near the Munessa forest. Available activities here are trekking, bird watching, horse riding, boat excursions, cycling, team-building activities, mini-soccer and beach volley ball.

04. Visit the Wolayta people and villages admiring spectacular green hills on the way to Arba Minch, (which means "forty springs" in Amharic). Afternoon drive to Chencha to visit the Dorze people, their unique culture, houses, and traditions. O/N Swaynes Hotel with spectacular views over Lakes Chamo and Abaya.

05. Morning visit to Netch Sar National Park, sanctuary of the endemic Swaynes hartebeest, zebra and more. Afternoon boat ride on Lake Chamo to see crocodiles, hippos and more. O/N Swaynes Hotel.

06. Proceed to Jinka, admiring the Derase, Tsemay, Ari and Benna people on the way. If today is Thursday, you can visit the very colorful market for the Tsemay and Erbore people at Key Afer. O/N Jinka.

07. Enter Mago National Park to visit the Mursi people and their villages. Here for beauty women insert round clay plates in their lips. The men practice scarification based on the number of enemies or wild animals they have killed in battle. O/N Jinka.

08. Drive to Turmi, and if today is Saturday you can see the colorful Hamer, Karo and Dassanech people at the market in Dimeka. Proceed to the Hamer villages and O/N tented bungalows at Evangadi Lodge.

09. Drive to visit the Karo people, with their interesting body decorations and scarification; admire the view of the Omo river from Kortcho village. Then drive on to Kangate and cross the Omo River by small boat to admire the Bume people and their villages. Back and O/N in Turmi.

10. Morning excursion to Omorate, on the banks of the Omo river, to visit the Dassanech people. Then back to Turmi for the colorful Monday market of the Hamer, Karo and Dassanech people. Witness Hamer dances (Evangadi) and seasonal marriage ceremonies with bull-jumping. O/N Evangadi Lodge.

11. Visit the Erbore villages and make a stop to admire the agricultural terracing practices of the Konso. Then proceed to Arba Minch for O/N.

12. Drive back to Addis. Traditional dinner in the evening with folk dances. Departure if post-congress tour.

Continue to Langano and O/N Wenney Eco-lodge, secluded in a natural paradise for vegetation, birds, mammals and tranquility, on the shores of Lake Langano and near the Munessa forest. Available activities here are trekking, bird watching, horse riding, boat excursions, cycling, team-building activities, mini-soccer and beach volley ball.

08. Continue to Arba Minch with some stops to visit the Wolayta people and their houses on the way. These people cultivate the false banana from which they extract their local bread, called kotcho. Afternoon drive to the mountains of Chencha to visit the houses, weaving, sorghum and false banana cultivations of the Dorze people. If it is Saturday, visit the Dorze market. Dinner and O/N at Arba Minch in Swaynes Hotel.

09. Drive to Turmi and on the way admire the Konso, Derase, Tsemay and Hamer people, famous for their hairstyles and unique cultures and traditions as well as body ornaments. The Konso are famous for their agricultural terracing and village traditions. O/N tented bungalows at Evangadi Lodge, Turmi.

10. Morning excursion to Omorate on the banks of the Omo river to visit the Dassanech villages. If it is Monday, return to Turmi to visit the market of the Hamer, Karo and Dassanech people. Then free day to visit with the Hamer people, their villages and ceremonies. If possible, you will observe a Hamer marriage ceremony with its unique celebrations such as the bull-jumping. O/N Turmi.

11. Cross into the Karo region and visit the village of Kortcho with its beautiful view over the Omo river. The Karo are famous for their extravagant hairstyles in the men and for their various ornaments and body paintings. O/N camping in Mago Park.

12. Game ride and visit to the Mursi people and villages. Here for beauty women insert round clay plates in their lips. Men practice scarification based on the number of enemies or wild animals they have killed in battle. O/N Jinka, local hotel.

13. Drive back to Arba Minch visiting the Ari, Benna, Tsemay, Derase and Konso people on the way. If it is Thursday, visit the Tsemay and Erbore market at Key Afer. O/N Swaynes Hotel, Arba Minch.

14. In the morning, visit Netch Sar Park, sanctuary of the endemic Swayne's hartebeest and zebra; admire views over the Rift Valley lakes of Chamo and Abaya. In the afternoon take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see hippos and 6-meter-long crocodiles. Meals and O/N Arba Minch, Swaynes Hotel.

15. Drive back to Addis Ababa. In the late afternoon, visit the Merkato, the biggest open-air market in Africa, souvenir shops and art galleries. O/N 4-star hotel. Departure can be made this evening if post-congress tour.

EXTENSION TOURS

A) RIFT VALLEY LAKES

01. Shala, Abyata and Langano Rift Valley lakes, to see birds, pelicans, flamingoes, hot springs and more. Continue to Wenney Eco-lodge, secluded in a natural paradise for vegetation, birds, mammals and tranquility, on the shores of Lake Langano and near the Munessa forest. 02. Drive to Awassa Lake and continue to the hot springs, hot water swimming pools and forest (great for walks) at Wondo Genet. O/N hotel at Wondo Genet.

B) RIFT VALLEY LAKES + ARBA MINCH

01. Shala, Abyata and Langano Rift Valley lakes, to see birds, pelicans, flamingoes, hot springs and more. Continue to Wenney Eco-lodge, secluded in a natural paradise for vegetation, birds, mammals and tranquility, on the shores of Lake Langano and near the Munessa forest. 02. Drive Arba Minch admiring the Wolayta people and their villages on the way and afternoon visit to the Dorze people, their villages, weaving, houses and traditions. Meals and O/N Arba Minch Swaynes hotel (3-star).

03. Visit Netch Sar Park, sanctuary of the endemic Swayne's hartebeest and zebra. PM boat trip on Lake Chamo, to see hippos and 6-meter-long crocodiles. The walk from the hotel to the springs is not to be missed. Meals and O/N Arba Minch, Swaynes Hotel.

04. Drive to Awasa Lake for lunch and continue to the hot springs, hot water swimming pools and forest (fantastic for walks) at Wondo Genet. O/N hotel at Wondo Genet (2-3-star).

05. Back to Addis Ababa. Afternoon visit to the Merkato, the biggest open-air market in Africa, souvenir shops, etc. O/N 4-star hotel.

C) HARAR

01. Fly to Dire Dawa to visit the town and then drive to Harar. O/N hotel.

02. Full day visit of Harar: markets, mosques, sultans' tombs, the house of French poet, Arthur Rimbaud, city walls, typical Adere houses, and more. In the evening watch the hyena man's show. Meals and O/N Harar.

03. Drive to Awash National Park for game drive, Awash River falls, park museum and more. O/N Bilen Lodge or camping.

04. In the morning visit the park and its surroundings as well as the Afar and Kereyou people. Drive back Addis Ababa. O/N hotel.

05. Departure.

This tour can be made in reverse, driving first to Awash and flying back from Dire Dawa.
