goes Dutch
 From
clogs to croquetjes, boerenkool to bulbs in full
bloom û Indulge in all things deliciously Dutch
when the quaint town of Tulbagh enlivens its
cultural heritage with nostalgic activities,
entertainment by singing Netherlander Stef Bos and
endless tussendoortjes during its annual Tulbagh
goes Dutch Festival from 12 to 13 April. Festival
sponsor, Drostdy Hof wines, brings Dutch icon Stef
Bos into its home at the stately De Oude Drostdy
Museum and invites festival-goers to an enchanting
Garden Concert on its historic grounds at 16h00 on
Saturday afternoon, 12 April. During the Festival,
visit this neo-classical museum on tractor rides
from the hub of the festival in historic Church
Street. Enjoy the fine collection of carefully
restored period furniture and indulge in
spectacular wine tastings by candelight in the
underground cellar.
Bring the family
and friends and roll out the picnic blanket for a
laid-back afternoon of contemporary sounds by
award-winning singer/songwriter Stef Bos under the
African sky. Born in Holland and living in Belgium,
he is adamant that his home is in South Africa,
where he sets foot annually to share vocal cords
with well-known local musicians such as Koos
Kombuis, Amanda Strydom, Tandie Klaasen and the
late Johannes Kerkorrel.
Legendary Church
Street with its beautiful Cape Dutch style
architecture transforms into a kaleidoscope of
interesting cultural attractions with appetising
spijs and drankje temptations and authentic
treasures colouring this historic
street.
Sit down to an
authentic Rijsttafel luncheon infused with tempting
flavours from the East at famous Readers Restaurant
and relax outside with an ice-cold Dutch lager in
the Heineken Beer Garden where you can enjoy side
splitting entertainment when televisionÅs
Maak-ën-Las personality Leon Beukes shares his
Dutch flavoured humour. Take a tasty trip to
Paddagang Restaurant for a traditional Dutch meal
plump with rookworst and zoutvlees served with
Patatje oorlog and nasi goreng.
Make your way to
the Witzenberg Country Inn for a cup of freshly
brewed Dutch coffee and traditional pannenkoeken
and pamper the senses with a Dutch Floral Display
roaming with fresh tulips and irises in the Oude
Kerk Volksmuseum.
Strut down Church
Street bustling with Dutch delicacies ranging from
krakelingen to chunky chocolades, haringbroodjes to
creamy cheese from Holland and hit the Tulbagh Wine
Route for a palatable lowdown on all the fine local
wines.
Pony rides, puppet
shows, 3-legged races and koeken happen at the Kids
Corner cater for all-day fun for the young
ones.
End the weekend
with the amicable Choir Festival in the Town Hall
on Sunday, 13 April.
