Special Exhibit of the Art of Nelson Mandela, Father to a Nation ... Inspiration to the World

NEW YORK, N.Y: When was the last time you had really good Monkey Gland sauce? How about Durban Somosas? Or Cape Town Haddock Fish and Chips?

Guests were able to sample all these delicious treats and more when South African Tourism and the South Street Seaport restaurants joined forces to deliver New Yorkers a unique window into the South African culinary experience. The special event, part of the month-long "Celebrate South Africa" promotion, was held from September 19-23, 2003. The Seaport was transformed into an exotic food-lover's paradise, with the restaurants offering a variety of South African-themed appetizer and entrée specials each day. New York's only South African restaurant, i-Shebeen Madiba, provided sauces and special recipes for the promotion.

Participating restaurants included Cabana, Gator's Southern Seafood, Harbour Lights, Heartland Brewery, Il Porto, J.P. Mustard, MacMenamin's & Bergin's Beer and Wine, Seaport Café, Sequoia and Skippers. Wine lovers could complement their dining experience with specially selected vintages from 57 Main Street Wine Company, importers of fine South African wines. Restaurants showcased the nation's popular beer and music offerings throughout the promotion period.

"Celebrate South Africa" was a spectacular series of events and promotions designed to showcase the nation's vibrant culture, unmatched experience and indomitable spirit. Other highlights in this series included an ongoing "Celebrate South Africa Storefront" a cultural cornucopia of things South African on the third floor of the Seaport's main mall, featuring the Art of Nelson Mandela, Father to a Nation...Inspiration to the World. On September 23, the sounds of South Africa filled the night air in a gala concert event at South Street Seaport's Pier 16. Produced by CD 101.9, the concert boasts a star-studded lineup including smooth jazz great Joe McBride, Nothembi, the "Queen of Ndebele Music," The South African All-Stars" and others.
