'THE
WORLD'S GREATEST BIRD
SPECTACLE'
Experience
"The World's Greatest Bird Spectacle", a
living carpet of thousands of flamingos
basking on the surface of Lake Nakuru in
Kenya. This magnificent "ocean of pink"
should be at the top of the checklist for
any birder bound for Africa. Safari
Seekers, a Nairobi-based tour operator,
offers a selection of guided safaris that
travel to this world-renowned Kenyan bird
sanctuary where up to 450 different bird
species can be sighted. "While Lake Nakuru
is best known for the pink flamingos,
visitors will also find lion, rhino,
leopard and large herds of waterbuck,"
says Zul Hasham, Managing Director of
Safari Seekers. "This extensive
combination of animals and birds is what
makes a trip to Kenya especially exciting
for birders."
Lake
Nakuru is located on the bed of the Great
Rift Valley, a few hours northwest of
Nairobi. It is a shallow soda lake where
more than one million Lesser and Greater
Flamingos seasonally use its waters to
feed on the abundant algae which thrive in
its warm waters. The best place to view
the flamingos is from Baboon Cliff, which
offers dazzling vistas of pink fringe
around the shoreline. Thousands of other
water birds congregate where small fresh
water inlets meet the lake, some of which
are the Egyptian Goose, Great White
Pelican, Cattle Egret, Blacksmith Plover,
and African Jacana.
Another
must-see for birders is Lake Baringo,
located 110 km north of Lake Nakuru. Lake
Baringo also attracts a broad range of
water birds. Its fresh waters host a
variety of fish that are absent in the
soda lakes, and along the shores visitors
can view Pelicans, Cormorants and Fish
Eagles. Birding enthusiasts from all over
the world make Lake Baringo one of their
most important stops in Kenya. Local
lodges often host a resident ornithologist
who conducts bird walks and evening slide
shows.
A
sample itinerary offered by Safari Seekers
is the Manyatta Safari which starts at US
$536 per person (land only). The itinerary
covers the Lakes Baringo, Bogoria, and
then travels south to Lake Nakuru, the Mau
Escarpment, and finally the Masai Mara
where the largest concentration of
elephant, zebra, wildebeests, rhino,
buffalo and lion are found. This 7-day
camping safari includes basic camping and
all meals on a full-board basis,
experienced drivers/guides, game drives,
camping equipment, transfers and park
fees.
